The blockbuster Man United and Brighton swap transfer that would seal Baleba deal - opinion

Manchester United are going all out to sign a new holding midfielder before the summer transfer window closes

Manchester United massively under-performed in the last campaign. They finished down in a disappointing 15th place in the Premier League. The Red Devils also lost in the Europa League final to league rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao.

Ruben Amorim was picked as their replacement for Erik ten Hag during last season and it has since been a mixed spell for him in terms of results. Prior to his move to England, he caught the eye with Sporting Lisbon in his native Portugal before he opted to depart. He has the chance to bring in some more signings over the coming weeks before the transfer deadline to freshen up his ranks.

Manchester United admirers of Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba

United are admirers of Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba and they are trying to sign him, as per The Indepedent. The 21-year-old, who is a Cameroon international with seven caps under his belt, has been a key player at the AMEX Stadium over recent times. He is being tipped for a bright future in the game.

The Seagulls signed the prospect in 2023 and he hasn’t looked back since. He has adapted with ease to life in England and has made 77 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with four goals. He is under contract in Sussex until 2028 meaning Fabian Hürzeler’s side are under no pressure to sell him anytime soon and can wait for the right offer to come in for his services before they even consider letting him depart.

Baleba started his career as a youngster at EF Brasseries du Cameroun. Lille then swooped in for him and he initially became an important member of their B team squad. He subsequently made the step up into their first-team and 23 matches, 19 of which came in Ligue 1, before Brighton took a gamble on him. When they do eventually sell him on, they are likely to pick up a hefty profit on him.

United will see him as someone to boost their midfield department. If they snapped him up, he would give them more competition and depth in the middle of the park. In addition, he would give Amorim something different to call upon.

Manchester United should offer Brighton and Hove Albion swap deal proposal

Brighton won’t want to lose Baleba and rightly so, he is one of their main players. Therefore, United need to think outside the box as they look to try and tempt him up to the North West. They should look into the possibility of giving the Seagulls one of their players plus some cash as part of a swap deal arrangement.

With that in mind, Tyrell Malacia seems the most obvious individual who the Red Devils can afford to let leave permanently. He needs to leave Old Trafford for the sake of his career now and try and lay down some roots somewhere else. The full-back is back in England after his loan spell at PSV during the latter stages of last term but his future is up in the air.

The 25-year-old could be a shrewd option for Brighton to have in their squad. He would provide back-up at left-back and give them some more depth at the back. Although they wouldn’t be able to offer him regular minutes, he would be a useful person to have in and around the dressing room. Of course, this wouldn’t be a straight swap deal - a hefty chunk of cash would be heading Brighton’s way too. Just not the £100m the Seagulls are after.

Malacia has a point to prove in the game and there is no point him staying at United. There is no doubt that he is a player with potential still and if he can stay injury free, he wouldn’t be a bad acquisition for a side like the Seagulls if they were willing to take a gamble on him. He joined his current team back in 2022 after catching the eye in the Eredivisie at Feyenoord and he has since made 47 outings altogether.
