Grammy-winning singer to headline NFL Week 1 game halftime show

Karol G will headline the halftime show during YouTube’s first exclusive NFL broadcast next month.

The Grammy-winning “Contigo” singer will perform live from Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil, where the NFL week 1 matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs will take place. The event will stream for free on YouTube on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.

Tim Tubito, Senior Director of Global Game Presentation and Entertainment at the NFL, said in a press release that the NFL wanted to honor its fan base in Brazil by returning to São Paulo. Additionally, the NFL wanted “to tap into the larger Latin Pop music scene with an innovative, global artist,” and Karol G fit the bill.

Karol G, whose real name is Carolina Giraldo Navarro, has a massive global presence. The Colombian singer is part of YouTube’s “Billion-View Club” with nearly 30 billion views on her YouTube channel. The music video for her single, “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido,” which is off her latest album “Tropicoqueta,” has amassed over 973 million views alone.

The Sept. 5 YouTube broadcast is also slated to feature local Brazilian star Ana Castela, who will perform Brazil’s national anthem. Meanwhile, American composer and jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington will perform the US national anthem. More talent announcements will be made later this month.

This game marks a major milestone as YouTube’s first-ever exclusive live NFL game. The partnership, now entering its third season, has changed how NFL fans consume football. Just last year alone, 350 million hours of NFL content was watched on YouTube.

This is also the second year the Week 1 game will be played at Brazil’s Corinthians Arena. Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Green Bay Packers 34 to 29 while Grammy-nominated Brazilian singer Anitta led the halftime show.

Fans in the U.S. can set a reminder here for next month’s Chargers vs. Chiefs matchup.
