Warriors hold firm as exec says Jonathan Kuminga deserves McDaniels-level deal

The Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga's contract standoff continues this offseason. Amid this an NBA executive believes the restricted free agent deserves a five-year, $131 million salary level comparable to Minnesota’s Jaden McDaniels.

According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, [one NBA executive said](https://athlonsports.com/other-sports/nba-exec-makes-131-million-claim-on-warriors-jonathan-kuminga-amid-contract-standoff):

"McDaniels is great in his role, but J.K. is more talented and has higher upside if he ever can hit."

While it might be a respectable offer, teams don't have the required cap space to give to Kuminga, leaving the Warriors in full control of his immediate future.

Meanwhile, Golden State’s offer still stands at two years, $40-45 million, including a second-year team option and a requirement to waive Kuminga’s no-trade clause. Kuminga, who is 22, knows better not to sign a deal too restrictive and short-sighted.

For the Warriors, they can't have another non-shooting wing in Kaminga. Last season, they traded for Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat, effectively removing Kuminga from the starting lineup. Thus, it is unlikely that both will stick with each other next season.

As far as trade options are concerned, offers have really dried up. The Suns and the Kings were some of the teams interested in him previously. Phoenix prepared a package including Royce O’Neale and Grayson Allen for Kuminga. Meanwhile, Sacramento proposed a deal with Devin Carter, Dario Šarić, and multiple picks. However, Golden State believes they can get much more for Kuminga

Last season, Kuminga played 47 games, averaging 15.3 points on 45.4% shooting, including 30.5% from the 3-point line. In 2023-24, he averaged 16.1 points.
