West Ham now want to sign 24yo midfielder after Mateus Fernandes talks break down

**West Ham United’s hunt for midfield reinforcements has taken a new turn, with Feyenoord’s Quinten Timber emerging as a possible summer target.**

[The Hammers had been chasing Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes](https://westhamblog.co.uk/posts/west-ham-see-opening-bid-for-mateus-fernandes-turned-down-by-southampton/), but a hefty £50 million asking price forced them to walk away, prompting a fresh look at other options.

Timber has built a strong reputation in the Eredivisie for his technical skill, tactical awareness, and ability to operate in multiple roles across midfield.

His contract with Feyenoord runs out next summer. However, contract negotiations have stalled, sparking speculation that the Dutch club could sell this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

The situation was exacerbated when Feyenoord manager Robin van Persie stripped Timber of the captaincy, with the player reluctant to commit to a new long-term deal.

Timber would be a decent addition to Graham Potter’s midfield, but the Hammers have to be wary of his injury record.

The 24-year-old suffered a serious injury in February, and it kept him out for the remainder of last season.

It hasn’t been long since he returned to training, but there’s no guarantee that he can pick up where he left off before his lengthy spell in the infirmary.

Before the injury, Timber was enjoying an outstanding campaign, scoring six goals and creating four big chances in just 18 Eredivisie appearances.

Former Feyenoord boss and current Liverpool manager Arne Slot once described him as a “special player,” and at 24, his best years are likely still ahead.

However, it remains to be seen if West Ham will act on their interest. The club has been linked with a host of other interesting names, including Harvey Elliott and Bilal El Khannouss.

West Ham are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements, but Timber’s injury history raises concerns about whether he can cope with the physical intensity of the Premier League.
