Alejandro Garnacho is losing fans by the day thanks to his attitude as he looks set to leave Manchester United – and former United players Lee Lawrence and Phil Marsh have criticised his behaviour as he tries to force his club to accept Chelsea’s offer.
Chelsea have made £50m signings over the summer but are trying to sign the player who scored a goal in last year’s FA Cup Final for just £30m. Garnacho is doing all he can to force the move, even though United are willing sellers – by trying to insist he’ll never play again, and posting controversial images online where he was holding a vape pen.
And Lawrence and Marsh, speaking on this week’s Talking Devils podcast previewing the Premier League opener, were heavily critical of a youngster who is following the footsteps they once walked.
“I think Amorim has the right approach bringing back the discipline that Sir Alex had when we were there,” Lawrence said. There wasn’t any social media when we were there, so we didn’t get involved in that world, but if you’re a player like Garnacho or Rashford and you come out of favour… in our days you’d keep your head down and have a bit of pride. For me it’s just an absolute madness the way it’s gone.”
“The player power is ridiculous. Just take care of yourself on the pitch and let the rest of it take care of itself.”
Marsh agreed. “You see players who feel they’re entitled to be in the position they’re in and they feel they don’t have to work as hard,” he said. “The money in football has done that to a lot of players. When we were there you felt you were in a privileged position, now it looks as though players have lost that hunger and desire. At Manchester United there’s no better place to come through the ranks and learn your trade. It’s shocking when you look at what Garnacho’s behaving like.”
