Michael Owen and Everton are not exactly a match made in heaven.

The former Liverpool striker was the nightmare for many Evertonians in the early 2000s, as he had Premier League defences running scared with his blistering pace.

He notched four goals for the Reds in 12 matches against the Toffees, not the best record, but his remarkable rise to stardom at Anfield will have been painful to watch.

He won five trophies with their Merseyside rivals while Blues fans are still waiting for their first since the 1995 FA Cup final.

Owen buys into new Everton era

David Moyes’ side are hoping for brighter times at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with renewed success desperately needed after years of misery.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

The Friedkin Group’s takeover is in full swing, and they have backed the Scotsman to improve his squad this summer.

They have signed the likes of Jack Grealish, Thierno Barry, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and there could still be more signings to come.

Former Liverpool ace Owen is impressed with their business and made a surprising prediction ahead of the new campaign.

Speaking to Premier League productions on 14 August, he believes that the Toffees will finish ninth and labelled them as the surprise package, saying: “With a new stadium and new ownership, a couple of new players – and I think there will be more signings – David Moyes has got a lot of momentum there at the moment.

“I think there’s a feel-good factor around the club and I can see them being in the top half and possibly challenging for Europe.”

Everton fans will hope Owen’s prediction comes true

A top-half finish would represent huge progress for the Blues and would likely mean that all their signings make an immediate impact.

Moyes has spoken of his desire to qualify for Europe, and that would leave them just a few places away and could give them a platform to build on and achieve what the Scotsman wants shortly.

Player Fee

Carlos Alcaraz £12.6m

Thierno Barry £27.6m

Mark Travers £4m

Adam Aznou £8m

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall £25m

Jack Grealish Loan

Everton’s signings this summer.

The new ownership needs to continue to back up, but the addition of Grealish has to be regarded as a major coup, as he is the exact type of player that they need to raise the levels.

Whether Owen is simply being too hopeful on the back of that addition remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: it is an exciting time to be an Everton supporter, and the dark times seem to be heading towards an end.
