Former Gophers quarterback is set for more preseason reps as he fights for a roster spot in Minnesota

The Minnesota Vikings won’t be playing former Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy this week against the Patriots. Coach Kevin O’Connell said Thursday that a bunch of starters won’t suit up, which opens the door for younger guys to get some time on the field.

That includes Sam Howell, who will get the start, but also Max Brosmer, a former Gophers quarterback. Brosmer has been showing well in training camp, and with McCarthy sitting out, he’s likely to get more snaps than before.

He got a chance in the first preseason game against the Texans and made it count. Brosmer went 5-for-8 for 47 yards and threw a fourth-quarter touchdown. It’s not a ton of action, but enough to make a case that he deserves more reps.

Brosmer’s still got plenty of work ahead of him.

He’s in the mix with Howell and Brett Rypien for a roster spot, and the competition is stiff. If he doesn’t crack the 53-man squad, the practice squad is the most likely landing spot. Of course, there’s always the chance another team comes calling for a backup role—but that’s just chatter at this point.

The important thing is he’s showing he can play at this level. Whether he ends up on the roster or the practice squad, his limited time on the field has been impressive. Vikings fans will be watching him as training camp goes on.

For a former Gopher trying to make it in the NFL, these moments don’t come often. Brosmer is making the most of it, and if he keeps playing like this, he could be one of the more interesting names to watch this preseason.
