PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver position remains up in the air, but one player has emerged throughout the last four weeks of training camp. That would be second-year Steeler Scotty Miller, who joined the team last season and re-signed with them this offseason.
Miller had just five receptions for 69 yards and was released before their playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens. He was later re-signed to the practice squad. So, that forced him to become an afterthought, but not anymore.
Head coach Mike Tomlin has shouted him out a few times, and assistant general manager Andy Weidl brought Miller up unprompted in an answer on Thursday, stating how much he stood.
Tomlin says that Miller knows all of the spots in the offense, and after a four-reception, 47-yard performance in Jacksonville, he continues to prove he might deserve a roster spot.
“He knows all the spots,” Tomlin said. “He’s highly conditioned. He’s very competitive. He’s a been-there, done-that guy, and so there’s a lot of value in his presence.”
Tight end Pat Freiermuth said Miller works his “tail off” and had another strong practice against the Buccaneers on Thursday. That only follows what Miller has done over his time with the Steelers in Latrobe.
Pittsburgh used him as a depth piece that was the backup punt returner last year, too. Without Calvin Austin III around, Miller has become a deep threat to be reckoned with during Steelers practices and has even drawn praise from quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
The former Buccaneers wide receiver is doing everything he can to force himself onto the roster, and it seems that is likely.
