Aside from Thursday’s awesome schedule release, all has been quiet on the Minnesota Timberwolves‘ shores. That could be changing soon.
A playmaker to facilitate and get Anthony Edwards off the ball more makes a good amount of sense. So far the straightforward answer hasn’t been found.
Timberwolves president Tim Connelly knows he has one final roster spot to fill before the season tips off. We’ve seen the Timberwolves sometimes leave that roster spot open, either to save money and/or to maintain trade flexibility throughout the season.
What about a guard for the MN Timberwolves though?
In other words, the Minnesota Timberwolves don’t have to fill the vacant roster spot, which would give recent signings such as Johnny Juzang a better chance of turning in his training camp offer into a real gig. However, according to The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski, the Timberwolves are considering a quartet of players for that highly desirable final roster spot.
The four names up for consideration are Malcolm Brogdon, Cam Payne, Landry Shamet, and Bones Hyland. Of course, Hyland closed out last season with the Timberwolves, and Krawczynski’s reporting suggests he’s the “frontrunner” to get the final spot again this year too.
The Wolves have looked into several candidates for the spot, including Malcolm Brogdon, Cam Payne and Landry Shamet, league sources told The Athletic. However, all indications are that Bones Hyland is the front-runner to get that final spot, league sources said. Hyland signed a two-way contract with the Wolves in February, played briefly in Iowa and spent the rest of his time with the Timberwolves.

While the final decision has yet to be made, it’s clear that the MN Timberwolves are still hunting for another guard to bolster their depth behind Mike Conley and Rob Dillingham.

Hyland was only with the Timberwolves on a two-way contract last season, which is the same type Naz Reid was initially signed to. Hyland made a strong impression while with the Iowa Wolves last season; perhaps the former Denver Nuggets player’s next chapter sees him make an impact in Minnesota too.
