How did Super Bowl Lix affect Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts for 2025?

As the Philadelphia Eagles have prepared for the 2025 NFL season, quarterback Jalen Hurts has been insistent the team’s victory in Super Bowl LIX must be left behind.

The former Alabama standout won the Pete Rozelle Trophy as the most valuable player of the Eagles’ 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL championship game for the 2024 season on Feb. 9.

When Philadelphia opened training camp last month, Hurts said the Eagles’ emphasis would be “on resetting.”

“It’s a new journey, it’s a new season, and those things are far behind us,” Hurts said. “The past is behind us, and the future is too far away, so we have to stay present and worry about right now.”

But during his press conference on Wednesday, Hurts said the Super Bowl LIX victory did have one lingering effect – on his confidence.

“Do you think you’re more confident when you get a promotion?” Hurts said. “You chase a dream, and everybody’s dream is to do that. And so once you can, that brings a sense of assurance that you can. …

“You got me talking, but it’s a matter of: If I’ve done it before, why couldn’t I do it again? And so it’s about knowing where you are as a team, being able to put all those things together to find a way to bring the best out of what the moment demands. And so that’s where I am as a quarterback. There is definitely a sense of confidence.

“I know someone asked that question last week in reference to Saquon (Barkley) and that those are things that you want to feed off of and build off of. But you have to have a diligent approach to it daily. It’s not something that’s guaranteed. Nothing is promised. And so there’s a willingness to just be open. And I think for me, I’ve always remained to be teachable and to be open and be coachable. And so I just want to continue to grow. I’ve been on a journey, and that journey’s still going, and it’s all about winning for me and trying to experience that feeling more and more.”

Hurts is working toward Philadelphia’s season-opening campaign. The Eagles will play in the first game on the NFL’s 2025 regular-season schedule on Sept. 4, when the Dallas Cowboys visit Lincoln Financial Field.

Before then, Philadelphia has two preseason games remaining. The Eagles play the Cleveland Browns on Saturday and the New York Jets on Aug. 22.
