Report: Nottingham Forest are still in talks with Juventus for Douglas Luiz

As Juventus manager Igor Tudor talked about playing Douglas Luiz in a more advanced position this season compared to where Thiago Motta had him much of the 2024-25 campaign, there was always a large caveat hanging over the Croatian’s statement: We don’t know if the Brazilian midfielder is going to be around the club in a couple of weeks.

All signs have pointed toward Luiz leaving — and that was even before he failed to show up for the start of preseason training last month.

Now, with a couple of weeks left in the summer transfer window, there again is some momentum gaining steam when it comes to Luiz potentially leaving Juventus this month.

[According Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio on Thursday](https://gianlucadimarzio.com/douglas-luiz-nottingham-forest-juventus-calciomercato-serie-a-news/), Juventus and Nottingham Forest have continued negotiations for the want-away Brazilian midfielder. Where those negotiations stand are still fairly uncertain, but it is enough to think that Forest are the current favorites to land the services of Juve’s €50 million signing from a summer ago. Luiz has also been linked with a move to a handful of Premier League clubs in recent weeks, with his former side Aston Villa being thrown into the mix as those who have checked in with Juventus regarding his status.

Forest could end up signing Luiz on loan with an option to buy, although those conditions to potentially make it an obligation could prove to be rather easily obtainable if he is to return to anything close to the player we saw for much of his time at Villa.

Considering we’ve heard that Luiz wants a return to the Premier League, seeing Forest try and push to get a deal done shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s not the big, Champions League-level club in England that he was hoping that would come over and get in contact with Juventus this summer, but Forest are going to be in the Europa League this coming season — and that is not exactly a bad alternative compared to some of the clubs he’s been linked not even being in a European competition to begin with.

The key to all of this is, a lot like with other players on the Juventus roster right now, how quickly a deal can get done considering other business is basically attached to it. It wasn’t even 48 hours ago when we heard that Juventus’ pursuit of Brighton midfielder Matt O’Riley is directly connected to Douglas Luiz’s status. So if Juve are to sign said Danish midfielder, they will need their Brazilian midfielder to leave over the next couple of weeks no matter if it’s a permanent sale or on loan with some sort of option or obligation to buy. Seems simple enough.
