Newcastle United are in the process of finalising Jacob Ramsey’s move from Aston Villa.

Jacob Ramsey arrived on Tyneside yesterday evening ahead of completing his move to Newcastle United.

Ramsey has been on the books at boyhood club Aston Villa since he was six but now 24, the midfielder is preparing for a new challenge over 200 miles away from home.

Newcastle are signing a midfielder they sought after selling an academy graduate of their own, Sean Longstaff, to Leeds United last month, while from a Villa perspective, the sale was necessary due to Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and UEFA’s squad cost rules (SCR).

The Magpies struck a £39million agreement with Villa on Thursday. Ramsey then flew to the North East late afternoon before heading to the club’s training ground to undergo the first part of his medical.

Ramsey is set to become United’s fourth summer signing following the arrivals of Anthony Elanga and Malick Thiaw from Nottingham Forest and AC Milan, respectively, and the loan signing of Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton.

How Jacob Ramsey can make debut vs Aston Villa - but it’s unlikely

If Newcastle can register Ramsey’s signing to the Premier League by 12pm today, then he will be eligible to make his debut against Villa on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 12:30pm).

However, as per Mail Sport, the Magpies are “very unlikely” to finalise the deal before the registration deadline, with parts of the medical and paperwork still to be completed. Ramsey will instead be available to make his debut for the club’s St James’ Park opener against Liverpool on Monday, August 25.

Newcastle United PSR tables turn

Villa’s financial situation has allowed Newcastle to take advantage, just like they were taken advantage of over 12 months ago by other clubs.

Pressures to comply with PSR forced the Magpies into selling academy graduate Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh for a combined £68m to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively.

Ramsey has long been admired by head coach Eddie Howe, with the midfielder first linked with a move to St James’ Park in January 2024. In 167 appearances for Villa, Ramsey has scored 17 goals and provided 19 assists.
