Chelsea: Players donate part of Club World Cup bonuses in classy gesture

Chelsea have announced that a portion of the bonuses from their Club World Cup triumph will be donated to the family of Diogo Jota, the former Liverpool forward, and his brother Andre Silva. The decision was made jointly by the squad and club management as a gesture of solidarity following the tragedy that claimed both players’ lives in early July.

The Blues earned around £84.4m by winning the inaugural edition of FIFA’s new tournament format, played between June and July, after a 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Of that sum, approximately £11.4m was allocated for the players who took part in the successful campaign.

According to the club, each player will give up part of their individual bonus to contribute towards the donation for Jota’s family. The contribution per player is roughly £392,000 before tax, fees and currency conversion.

Jota, 27, and his brother Andre Silva, who played for Portuguese side Penafiel, died in a car accident in the Spanish province of Zamora on 3 July. The incident deeply affected the European football community, particularly in Portugal and England, where Jota had been a key figure for Liverpool since joining in 2020.

During his time at Anfield, Jota scored 65 goals in 182 matches and played decisive roles in multiple competitions. As a tribute, Liverpool announced last month that his No.20 shirt would be permanently retired across all levels of the club.

Chelsea’s gesture highlights the solidarity that can exist between Premier League rivals. Although Jota played for one of their fiercest competitors, both the Blues’ players and coaching staff were keen to show their support for his family.

The west London club were among several sides to publicly back Liverpool in the days following the tragedy. Pedro Neto, Chelsea’s Portuguese forward, was a close friend of Jota and paid tribute to his former national team-mate during the Club World Cup. In an emotional statement ahead of the final against PSG, he recalled how Jota had helped him settle into the Premier League.

“When I take to the pitch on Sunday, know that I want to win this competition for Diogo Jota. He will always be with me. He will always be remembered. My thoughts are still with him, his brother André Silva and their families. It’s such a difficult moment,” Neto said before the final.

Everyone at Chelsea FC is devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre.
