Milwaukee Bucks Were Almost in on Warriors’ Dissatisfied Jonathan Kuminga But There’s 1 Player They Refused to Give That Broke the Deal

Milwaukee Bucks 2025 offseason moves is all about getting younger. They re-signed the younger players from the season before and then released three who are already 32 years old and above. They could have gone even younger if only their deal for Jonathan Kuminga pushed through.

Kuminga’s future with the Golden State Warriors remains uncertain as the 22-year-old forward seeks a new deal amidst the dissatisfaction he is feeling over the inconsistent playing time.

The Bucks reportedly tried to make a deal for the high-leaping small forward but trade talks broke down after they refused to include big man Bobby Portis on the package.

“It is also worth mentioning that the Milwaukee Bucks were another team that kicked around the idea of pursuing Kuminga,” NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote on Clutch Points.

“If they were to do so, the Warriors made it known they would want Bobby Portis in a sign-and-trade scenario, which is something Milwaukee wasn’t willing to do.”

Jonathan Kuminga not enough for Bobby Portis

Kuminga has so much upside but Portis got the veteran savvy and toughness that the Warriors need.

Rumors of Portis getting interest with the Warriors first came out early June when Warriors were said to be looking for a big man which is their main problem last season. Their long-time center Kevon Looney has also left the team.

“Golden State has always been a team to monitor for Portis, who has a notable fan in head coach Steve Kerr from their shared days during the 2023 FIBA World Cup competition with USA Basketball,” Jake Fischer reported.

In the end, Portis remained with the Bucks and signed a three-year deal worth $42 million. He said him staying with Milwaukee is a match made in heaven.

“I really couldn’t see myself playing anywhere else.”
