Just in: Sunderland reach 'agreement' to sign PSG star, player given permission to fly to UK

Sunderland have reached an agreement in principle to sign Paris Saint-Germain full-back Nordi Mukiele, journalist Fabrice Hawkins has reported.

The Stadium of Light side are set to make their 12th signing of a busy summer, as Mukiele is close to completing the move and has been given permission to travel for a medical.

Sunderland have already welcomed left-sided defenders Reinildo and former West Ham ace Arthur Masuaku this summer, as well as centre-back Omar Alderete.

The Paraguayan defender was announced as the latest signing earlier this week, joining on a four-year deal from La Liga side Getafe.

GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed Sunderland’s advanced talks to sign Mukiele, with the 27-year-old defender giving the green light to the Stadium of Light move:

Mukiele, who joined PSG from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2022, spent last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, where he made 24 appearances across all competitions and scored two goals.

The 27-year-old defender made five starts in the Champions League for Xabi Alonso’s side last term, including in the Round of 16 first leg against Bayern Munich, where he was sent off for two yellow cards.

Mukiele sustained a muscle injury that saw him miss the final month of the season, during which he helped Bayer finish second in the Bundesliga.

The one-cap France international struggled to make an impact at PSG following his arrival from Leipzig in 2022, having made just 21 starts in Ligue 1 for the Parisian giants.

Mukiele helped PSG win the domestic treble in 2023/24 and claimed five major trophies in total during his time in France, while he is also a German Cup winner with RB Leipzig.

Sunderland have invested heavily to bolster Regis Le Bris’ squad over the past three months, with the likes of Granit Xhaka, Habib Diarra, Simon Adingra and Chemsdine Talbi among the marquee signings.

The Black Cats have made Xhaka first-team captain ahead of their Premier League opener against West Ham at home on Saturday.
