As training camp comes to a close, the Dallas Cowboys remain at odds with Micah Parsons. The star linebacker did not participate in any official practice due to back tightness, leaving things unknown regarding his availability come Week 1.
Parsons and the Cowboys have been in a standoff for months now. Entering the final year of his rookie deal, the former first-round pick has sought out an extension. However, the front office has had minimal discussions about locking up the homegrown talent long-term.
Things reached a fever pitch when Parsons requested a trade in a viral social post. That said, nothing new has happened since this decision. Dallas has no intentions of dealing Parsons right now, meaning that this saga will continue to drag on.
Jerry Jones expects Micah Parsons to be on the field for the Cowboys Week 1
During the early stages of training camp, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed a lot of doubt when it came to Parsons. Recently, he's completely changed his tune.
While speaking with the media on Wednesday, Jones was asked for an update regarding contract negotiations with Parsons. He is unsure when the two sides will sit down again, but did note that their season opener is approaching and the 26-year-old still has a current contract to honor.
"I don't know that necessarily talks will," Jones said per The Athletic. "But we got a game coming and he's under contract."
Jones harped on contracts a lot during his availability, possibly hinting at how this ordeal will unfold. Some of his later remarks insisted that Parsons could be stuck playing out the final year of his rookie deal before proper talks happen.
"All you got to go on are contracts," Jones continued. "We are negotiating for a contract. When you do a contract, you would hope that after a negotiation that that's what both the team and player look to to see what our obligations are. I have a lot of respect for a contract."
Based on Jones' comments, it doesn't look like Parsons is going to ink an extension before the Cowboys face the Eagles Week 1. Only time will tell if he'll decide to join his teammates on the field or if this situation will take another messy turn.
