Did Timberwolves influence Donte DiVincenzo's decision to skip EuroBasket 2025?

The Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly did not block Donte DiVincenzo from playing for Italy in EuroBasket 2025.

Italians were hoping to see a major reinforcement wearing the blue jersey at the upcoming EuroBasket 2025, but the arrival of their star guard will have to wait until next summer.

After receiving his Italian passport in mid-July, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo was on the verge of representing Italy for the first time, but unfortunately, an injury concern led him to ultimately decline the invitation.

Reportedly, it was solely the player’s decision to sit out the tournament, as according to The New York Times, the Timberwolves did not block him from representing his country at EuroBasket.

"Donte DiVincenzo was planning to play for Italy at EuroBasket starting at the end of the month, but he pulled out as a precaution to ensure he is healthy entering training camp," New York Times reports.

"There is no concern about the toe injury that caused him to miss time last season. The Timberwolves did not block him from playing, according to team sources."

In the 2024–25 NBA season, the 28-year-old DiVincenzo averaged 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists over 62 games (10 starts) with the Timberwolves.

The naturalized player spot for the tournament is now taken by Valencia Basket guard Darius Thompson, who has already made his debut with the team in the friendlies.
