'I couldn't stop': Jurgen Klopp says he once did something 'embarrassing' at Liverpool during a Merseyside Derby

Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp was not just an elite manager; he was a fantastic character as well.

The German brought immense success to Anfield, winning the Premier League, Champions League, as well as domestic cups, and he will forever be a hero to the fans there.

Klopp’s style of football was a joy to watch as well, but what was more entertaining for the neutral at times were his reactions on the touchline.

The 58-year-old has now had his say on one of those moments.

Jurgen Klopp reacts to his celebration during Liverpool vs Everton clash in 2018

Jurgen Klopp had an excellent record in Merseyside Derbies during his time at Liverpool.

The former Reds boss lost just two of the 19 games he played against Everton, which is an incredible record considering how intense the derby is.

Back in December 2018, when Liverpool played Everton at Anfield, the game looked destined to end 0-0 with both sides failing to find the back of the net in normal time.

Klopp didn’t just start Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane in attack, but he also gave the nod to Xherdan Shaqiri.

None of them could score against the Toffees in that game, but substitute Divock Origi managed to nod the ball into the net after a mistake by Jordan Pickford deep in stoppage time.

Klopp was over the moon with that goal, so much so that he ran on the pitch towards Alisson Becker and gave him a big hug.

Now, in a video on BR Football, Klopp rated some of the celebrations he has seen over the years, and when he saw his own actions from 2018, he admitted that it was a little embarrassing.

He said: “Yes! I know who scored the goal. I know the reason for that one (celebration).

“It was a little bit embarrassing for me, but I couldn’t stop. I couldn’t hold myself, like a few times in my life. This was 1-0, Divock Origi, 90+4′ against Everton.

“So it was pretty clear that we’d win that game, and I thought it was a good idea to celebrate with my goalie. You can rate that (celebration), but for me, it’s a 15/10.”

How much did the FA fine Jurgen Klopp for his celebration?

Klopp’s celebration was great to watch for Liverpool fans, but it broke the rules.

The FA charged the German right after the game, and as per TNT Sports, he was fined £8,000 for his actions.

Klopp, who apologised in his post-match interview, accepted the fine without any protest.

He said: “Absolutely OK, to be honest. I couldn’t avoid it obviously, but that’s what the rules are for, and if you break the rules, you have to be fined for it.

“That’s what happened, no problem with that, it’s completely normal. The last time I did it was around 14 years ago. I’m not that quick any more. It will be fine.”
