'Can play' - Amorim names alternative Manchester United midfield option amid Baleba pursuit

Man Utd would like to sign a midfielder before the end of the summer transfer window.

Ruben Amorim insists he is happy with the midfield options he has at his disposal at Manchester United amid their unlikely pursuit of Brighton ace Carlos Baleba. United would ideally like to sign a midfielder before deadline day, but club sources admit a move for the 21-year-old remains unlikely at this moment in time.

United have just four senior midfield options at their disposal for the forthcoming campaign in Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro. Mason Mount is viewed as an attacking midfield option, Toby Collyer is set to join West Brom on loan, while Sekou Kone has never played a single second of competitive football in his career.

Amorim still has two players available for either central midfield role, but it will only take one injury or suspension to leave them light in the key position. It means United are still open to signing a central midfielder before deadline day, but time is running out to get a deal over the line.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the Arsenal clash, Amorim was quizzed on whether or not he wanted to sign a midfielder before deadline day. "I am really happy with our players, they are working really well. We have different players for the position," he said.

When asked if United had any internal solutions who could step into the role, the head coach cited Mount as an option if required. He added: "Maybe Mason Mount I think, can play in that position, but then we are going to find out. But we have players to cope."

United would like to add a mobile midfielder to their squad before deadline day and Baleba is viewed as the ideal fit for their tactical set-up. It is understood Baleba would be keen on an Old Trafford move this summer, though he is not expected to force his way out of Brighton and could quite easily stay there for at least another season.

Brighton have made it clear they do not intend to sell Baleba in the current window and will only sanction a sale if it matches their valuation of the player. Early indications suggest it will take a fee of at least £100 million, though that could be the overall value of the package, with a smaller initial transfer fee.
