'I think': Former England defender delivers verdict on whether Marc Guehi is better than Ibrahima Konate

Arne Slot still has a fair few decisions to make about his Liverpool squad before the transfer window closes.

The Anfield outfit have already spent well over £200million on improving their ranks, but due to the sales of players such as Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, there’s still plenty of money left to be spent.

Over the last couple of days, three players have been strongly linked with a Liverpool move, with the Reds looking to retain their Premier League title.

One of those players is Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace captain has entered the final year of his contract and has long been linked with a transfer to Liverpool.

And now, questions are starting to get asked as his move to Anfield becomes increasingly likely.

Michael Dawson questions whether Marc Guehi is better than Ibrahima Konate

As everyone will know, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are Slot’s first-choice centre-backs.

Indeed, Joe Gomez is also among Liverpool’s ranks, but due to his unreliability, he isn’t at the same level as the aforementioned duo.

And, since the Reds only have three senior centre-backs among their ranks, it’s not a surprise to see Guehi being linked with a move.

In fact, while live on Sky Sports, former England defender Michael Dawson gave his thoughts on whether Guehi is a better centre-back than Konate at the moment.

“Do I think he [Guehi] is better than Konate at this moment in time? I think he’s probably one of the best English centre-halves out there, but it’s a big step up,” he said.

“This is going from Crystal Palace to a team that is challenging and going to arguably win the Premier League. Does he play? It’s a big decision for him.

“If he plays for Crystal Palace this year, he plays for England next summer in the World Cup.

“If he doesn’t and plays for Liverpool, that’s the question mark, will he play enough games to be in that starting team [for England].

Liverpool must sign both Giovanni Leoni and Marc Guehi

Seeing as though Liverpool haven’t yet replaced Jarell Quansah, there’s a rather large hole in their defence.

Indeed, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch can both play there if needed, but there’s no denying that it would be better for the Reds to have an actual centre-back used at the heart of their defence.

Giovanni Leoni is an 18-year-old Italian centre-back from Parma who is set to be announced by Liverpool on Friday.

He was one of the most sought-after players in Italy, with teams such as Inter Milan vying for his transfer.

And, although he has bags of potential to fulfil, as he’s still so young, it’s unfair to rely on him to be the Reds’ third choice.

This is why it makes total sense for Liverpool to still move for Guehi, as he’d be able to give Konate and Van Dijk some well-deserved rest while allowing the starting XI to keep at the same quality.

Of course, only time will tell what the future has in store, but if the Reds can afford to sign both Leoni and Guehi, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t.
