Here’s how Seahawks plan to use their starters against Chiefs in preseason game

It seems unlikely quarterback Patrick Mahomes will play Friday in the Chiefs’ preseason game in Seattle.

But Mahomes’ counterpart on the Seahawks will. Seattle coach Mike Macdonald talked this week about how he plans to use the starters for Friday’s game, which kicks off at 9 p.m. and will air on KSHB-TV (Ch. 41).

“We’re still kind of working through it right now, but our guys are going to start the game out and we’ll see how long it goes,” Macdonald said on the team’s website.

Macdonald was asked if Seahawks starting quarterback Sam Darnold needed work in preseason games.

“I don’t think we need to,” Macdonald said, “but I think it’s the best thing for us.”

Once Darnold leaves the game, it’s likely that ex-Mizzou star Drew Lock will play quarterback for the Seahawks. Lock, the former Lee’s Summit High School star, began his career with the Denver Broncos. He’s now the No. 2 quarterback for the Seahawks.

Receivers Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp also are expected to play, per a story on the Seahawks website.

“I’m looking forward to seeing our team go rip and then we can kind of move from there,” Macdonald said in that story. “These guys have been working their tails off. Talking to guys on the sideline, it’s hard for them to watch the game and not be a part of it, so I think they’re excited to go out there.”

Macdonald added, “I’m excited to see these guys demonstrate what they’ve been doing, and they’ve earned it. They’ve earned that opportunity to go let it rip out there and show what they can do to the rest of the world.”
