Ederson staying or going? Pep addresses transfer talk, Man City goalkeeper situation

Pep Guardiola has commented on speculation linking Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson with a move away from the club before the summer transfer window closes on September 1.

The 31-year-old stated earlier this summer that he intends to remain at the Etihad Stadium after shutting down “fake news” about his future following reports of interest in his services from Saudi Arabia.

Despite that, Ederson continues to be linked with an exit from the Citizens and it is now understood that Galatasaray are keen to bring the Brazil international to Turkey.

Galatasaray have allegedly made a direct approach to Man City over a deal to sign Ederson, while reports in Turkey have suggested that the goalkeeper has already agreed personal terms with the Super Lig champions.

Ederson has entered the final year of his contract at Man City and the current transfer window represents the best opportunity for the Citizens to cash in on the goalkeeper if they wish to avoid losing him for free in 12 months’ time.

Guardiola confirms Ederson has not (yet) asked to leave Man City

Speculation over the future of Ederson has intensified amid reported interest from Man City in Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who looks increasingly likely to leave the French giants this summer following a fallout over his contract.

The summer arrival to James Trafford from Burnley has also raised concerns over the long-term future of Ederson at Man City, but the No.31 has been tipped to remain as Guardiola’s first choice in the new season, though he is set to miss Saturday’s Premier League opener with Wolverhampton Wanderers due to injury.

Nevertheless, Guardiola has suggested that he would like to keep Ederson and he cannot predict what will happen in the remaining few weeks of the transfer window.

Speaking about Ederson and addressing his goalkeeper situation at a press conference on Friday, Guardiola said: "Ederson didn't come to me and said he wanted to leave or he has an offer.

“All the players here are our players and I want them. What's going to happen in three weeks, nobody knows."

Manchester City's Ederson and Stefan Ortega warming up on October 25, 2023

Ederson’s future remains up in the air ahead of transfer deadline

Widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in world football, Ederson arrived at Man City from Benfica in 2017 and has since played an integral role in a successful side under Guardiola, winning 18 trophies including six Premier League titles and one Champions League.

The three-time Premier League Golden Glove has made a total of 372 appearances for the Citizens across all competitions, including 26 top-flight outings during an injury-hit 2024-25 campaign.

Ederson is not the only Man City player who has been linked with an exit this summer, as Guardiola has also responded to speculation over the future of winger Savinho amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Stefan Ortega, meanwhile, has seemingly slipped to third-choice goalkeeper at Man City following the arrival of Trafford, and the German is expected to leave the club before the transfer window closes.
