Preseason buzz confirms what the Jaguars already knew about Parker Washington

The new leadership of the Jacksonville Jaguars has emphasized competition since day one. Head coach Liam Coen has pushed competition across every level, but never so much as with the offensive line.

Back at Organized Team Activities, the new Jaguars head coach talked about the importance of making players earn their roles.

"It's rep-to-rep, honestly," Coen said, back during week 1 of OTAs. "Getting guys in with the ones in the first rack and then slide them in with the twos with the next rack, and try to give guys opportunities...We always want to compete in everything that we're doing, but ultimately, it's about trying to create that continuity at times within the system."

While players like Walker Little, Anton Harrison, and Patrick Mekari are clear starters, Coen was a little less clear when training camp started. "There's really no, 'Hey, these are the starters that are going to be out there against Carolina [in Week 1].' Do you have some ideas [about who will start]? Sure, but ultimately, there is a lot of competition that will occur, especially throughout this offseason and as we get into training camp."

The Jaguars' rotating offensive line continues into the preseason

With this mentality, it should come as no surprise that the Jags continue to rotate their linemen, even leading into preseason week 2. After watching yesterday's practice, John Shipley of Sports Illustrated reports that Jacksonville is trying different combinations in the trenches.

"The Jaguars had six different players take snaps at right tackle with the top units on Thursday: Anton Harrison, Fred Johnson, Walker Little, Patrick Mekari, Chuma Edoga, and Wyatt Milum," Shipley wrote.

And days ahead the preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, the Jaguars will make further tweaks, with Anton Harrison and Chuma Edoga missing practice.

With Edoga getting snaps at right tackle, it may come as a surprise to see him listed on the depth chart as starting right guard—sharing the slot with offseason acquisition Patrick Mekari. With players like Harrison and Little as clear starters, the Jaguars brass is looking to keep Lawrence's protection at peak performance should either of them go down.

Jaguars own J.P. Shadrick emphasizes that this had been the plan all along, "The offensive line continued to work through rotations, with players flipping positions throughout practice – even after tackle Anton Harrison left practice midway with an undisclosed injury."

Shadrick continues, "Rarely will an offensive line have the same starting lineup all season, so having players who can play multiple positions is huge. It's even better if they can flip sides of the center, which is tougher than you think. This offensive line group will set the tone for whatever this offense is going to be."

In the end, the Jaguars surely know what their starting offensive line will look come Week 1 of the regular season. That said, it's great to see him try diffrent combinations in case the injury bug strikes.
