Newcastle United have reignited their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos, just days after sources close to the player and the clubs told the same reporters that a deal was unlikely.
The 24-year-old was on Newcastle’s shortlist earlier in August but appeared to have fallen out of contention following initial enquiries from the Tyneside club.
Ramos has admirers within St James’ Park, and intermediaries have suggested a permanent deal could be possible with two weeks left in the transfer window. PSG would prefer to sell the player, not loan him away only to have him back at the end of the season, and the Portugal international is now back in the ever-shrinking pool of targets explored by Newcastle.
One of main points supporting NUFC’s case for a Ramos transfer is his diminishing—if it ever existed—role under Luis Enrique, with the Portugal international limited to only 34 starts in 88 appearances since arriving from Benfica.
Newcastle’s plan remains to bring in two strikers before the transfer deadline, a move that would enable Isak’s departure once and for all.
Yoane Wissa is expected to complete a move from Brentford next week, while Ramos’ availability could accelerate discussions with PSG depending on whoever else truly is in Newcastle’s radar.
One thing worth noting from the aforementioned report is that Eddie Howe isn’t going to accept compromising on quality or character in his search for incoming transfers, which isn’t unclear how could impact Ramos potential arrival.
