Former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator was brought in by the Chicago Bears to be the team’s new head coach, in large part because the franchise felt he could maximize the potential of young quarterback Caleb Williams.
Johnson’s coaching staff has made sure to hold its players accountable this offseason, and Johnson isn’t making an exception for his young quarterback. He recently revealed that Williams hasn’t been hitting one of his benchmarks.
“HC Johnson on Caleb Williams not hitting 70% completion rate in practice: ‘We’ve been underneath that bar. We’re learning, we’re growing. Early on, we were probably 55%. It’s gotten better as camp has gone on, but we haven’t hit that threshold as often as we would like,'” reported Underdog NFL.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“They don’t know how to talk to the media lol they’re just giving out bulletin board material,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“I don’t think he’s cut for this offense, doesn’t mean he isn’t talented – just that him and Johnson might not mesh,” someone else added.
“Y’all don’t realize how complex Ben Johnson offense is it takes time to learn just look at his first year in detriot with Goff some of y’all just hate to hate,” another fan wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see if Williams is where he needs to be by the time the regular season arrives.
