Rockets secure early opportunity to make statement in playoff rematch next season

The Houston Rockets are ready to prove they belong as a contender, and they’ll get a chance to make an early statement next season.

This offseason, the Rockets made arguably the biggest move of the offseason when they traded for Kevin Durant. The former MVP has been one of the most polarizing players in the league despite his incredible efficiency.

Still, it was well worth the risk for Houston, giving the young core a chance to quickly ascend into the championship picture. One of the reasons the Rockets felt comfortable making such a move is that they saw what they were missing in their first-round loss to the Golden State Warriors.

While the Rockets will begin their season in Oklahoma City, they won’t have to wait all that long to match up with the team that eliminated them just a few months ago. This won’t be just a regular game, either. This will be the final matchup of group play in the NBA Cup, which could mean a lot for these two teams that each advanced to the knockout stage last season.

Add in the chance for Houston to prove they leaped the Warriors with their deal for Durant, and this could be one of the highlights of November. Of course, this would also mark Durant’s first game back in Golden State as a member of his new team.

Looking to find the same success as a Rocket that he did in Golden State, Durant will be relied upon to lead his new team past its bitter rival.
