The Reds were two clear at the hour mark, but a quickfire brace of counter-attack goals from Antoine Semenyo had the match level with 25 minutes remaining.

Liverpool piled on the pressure, desperate to open the season with three points, and the substitute Chiesa fired home from close range after a bungled clearance to take the spoils. Mohamed Salah then added a fourth in injury time to compound Bournemouth’s misery.

Hugo Ekitike impressed on debut, opening the scoring in the first half after awkwardly beating Marcos Senesi by way of a fortunate deflection, before curling an effort beyond Djorde Petrovic.

After the break, he set a ball back for Cody Gakpo, who skipped past one man and passed his shot into the bottom right corner to double Liverpool’s advantage.

The occasion was marred in the first half as Semenyo self-reported racist abuse from the crowd. Referee Anthony Taylor briefly paused proceedings to report the incident to stadium staff, and the Premier League have committed to a full investigation.
