'One of the stars': Michael Owen names one Liverpool player who really stood out during tonight's match

Liverpool got their title defence underway with a dramatic 4-2 win over Bournemouth.

The Reds have had a hugely exciting summer in the transfer market and things on the pitch were equally as thrilling, although fans will have gone through a rollercoaster of emotions.

After going 2-0 up, Liverpool let the lead slip but managed to recover late on, although the overall performance was far from their best.

However, one player in particular can hold his head up high and showed some really promising signs, with the crowd loving what they saw while he was on the pitch.

And, Michael Owen liked what he was seeing as well, with the former Liverpool striker believing that they have a serious player on their hands.

Michael Owen raves about Hugo Ekitike

As expected, the new signings were in under the spotlight for the Reds in their first game of the season, with Arne Slot picking four of them to go straight into the starting XI.

Striker Hugo Ekitike was one of these and the Frenchman has a Premier League debut to remember after opening the scoring after 37 minutes.

He looked lively and showed some excellent pieces of skill with tidy touches and silky flicks, with his goal being the icing on the cake.

Owen was also quick to praise his performance too, with the Englishman believing Liverpool have a star in the making.

“It has been a blood-and-thunder match. A lot of effort has gone in, and Hugo Ekitike has been one of the stars,” Owen said.

“He gets lucky with the goal but he makes his own luck, his touch has been fantastic so far. The goalkeeper helps him by going down early, and every centre-forward wants to finish in the far corner.”

Despite his excellent performance, Ekitike was subbed off in the 72nd minute, just before Bournemouth started to get back into the game.

Hugo Ekitike is the perfect Liverpool player

Liverpool wanted a striker all summer and with the options rather limited, they took a gamble on Ekitike, and it appears to be paying off.

In pre-season, and now in the Premier League, the Frenchman has led the line to good effect, with his hold-up and link-up play perfect for Slot’s style of play.

As well as being a facilitator, he also has an end product to match, with his goal meaning he has netted twice in as many games.

Of course, it is way too early to predict just how good he will be, but all the signs suggest he might just have a very successful Anfield career.
