As Mo Salah went to the Kop at full time, he couldn’t hold back the tears as Anfield sang for Diogo Jota.
Following Federico Chiesa‘s decisive 88th-minute strike to put Liverpool ahead against Bournemouth, Salah sealed the win deep into injury time.
As he ran to the Kop, he made the shark gesture Jota would often produce when celebrating goals and, after the match, the Egyptian shared an emotional moment with supporters.
With most of his teammates having left the pitch, Salah stayed and faced the Kop, standing and staring as the crowd sang Jota’s song in unison.
Unable to hold back the tears, Liverpool’s No. 11 cried for his friend and applauded the fans before leaving and heading down the tunnel.
The full-time scenes came at the end of an emotionally charged night which began with tributes before kick-off.
Ahead of the game, supporters sang You’ll Never Walk Alone and raised cards to reveal a mosaic reading ‘AS 30’ on the lower Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand and ‘DJ20’ on the Kop.
These are, of course, references to Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who passed away in a car accident on July 3.
In addition to Salah producing the shark celebration, Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo also paid tribute to Jota, making a ’20’ with their fingers after scoring Liverpool’s first and second goals, respectively.
Before kick-off, Bournemouth fans also paid their respects to Jota, holding up a banner that said, ‘Diogo Jota, 20, together’.
With Jota’s widow, Rute, and family in attendance, Liverpool fans also unveiled banners on the Kop.
As one said,’Rute, Dinis, Duarte, Mafalda – Anfield will always be your home. You’ll Never Walk Alone’.
