Nicolas Jackson is suspended for Chelsea’s opening match of the season, this Sunday against Crystal Palace, thanks to the red card he received against Newcastle United at the end of last season, but even if he were available, he would not be taking part.
Our second leading goalscorer in the league last season looks set to leave the club before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month, with some reports putting that decision down to him, and others making it out to be Chelsea’s choice alone. Either way, the outcome would be the same. While he’s training with the team — so not quite full Bomb Squad™ status — he’s not going to actually play.
Jackson did not feature in either of our two preseason friendlies, and he’s set to continue on the sidelines for the season opener as well. Enzo Maresca confirmed the decision in Friday’s pre-match press conference.
“He is training with us [the first-team squad], but he is not going to be involved. You know the situation already. The window transfer is open. He can leave, and we’ll see.”
“[We] have two No.9’s: Liam and João. Nico is still with us; you know the situation.”
So that’s pretty clear, though it’s a bit less clear where Jackson might end up. Manchester United have got their guy and Newcastle United still have theirs. Soooo…?
