All the latest injury news surrounding Sunderland and West Ham ahead of their Premier League opener.
West Ham are back in Premier League action on Saturday when they take on new boys Sunderland in the North East. The Iron are hoping for a much better season this time out after a disastrous campaign of last.
This will be an interesting test against a Black Cats side that will have a hugely passionate home support behind them. Here we round up all the latest injury news surrounding both sides heading into their season opener.
Crysencio Summerville - Out
Summerville has been struggling for months with a hamstring issue. Back in May, Potter said: “It's been a complicated one with him, and I think we're looking towards pre-season. Stage by stage, depending on how he reacts and how he goes, but the target would be the first few weeks in pre-season.” Potter confirmed on Thursday that Summerville would remain sidelined here. He said: “We’ve still got Crysencio Summerville in the last stages of his rehab, so he won’t be available, but he’s getting really close, so that’s good for us.”
George Earthy - Out
The young talent has an ankle injury that will keep him out. Potter has said: “George Earthy still had an injury that he sustained early in pre-season. Apart from that, we’re pretty much close to full availability.”
Marc Guiu - Fit
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has confirmed that Guiu is fit enough to feature but he may not be able to start, He said: “The final decision [on these players] will be late. They came this week so we will have to see if they are ready. To start or just the final part of the game? We’ll see tomorrow. I think with Marc, Arthur and Omar we are going to have the opportunity to select them. I think it might be a little bit tough to start because of their fitness levels and because they have not had much time with their team mates. So it might be a little bit early for them to start but that is a decision we will make on Friday morning.”
Arthur Masuaku - Fit
The same applies to Masuaku.
Omar Alderete - Fit
It’s a similar situation for Alderete, with Le Bris saying: "With Omar, he has had two 45s I think. There was also a small issue with his knee but that is now totally healed. He had about ten days where he was not in full training. I think he is probably not really ready to start a game. I think if we needed him really he could, because he is a warrior."
Romaine Mundle - Out
Le Bris has confirmed: "The timeframe was about two-and-half or three months, so I think he will hopefully be back sometime in October.”
Dennis Cirkin - Out
Cirkin is now back in light training after missing pre-season through injury, but this one is going to come too early for him after so long out.
Aji Alese - Out
Alese is currently in the rehabilitation process after having shoulder surgery. Sunderland say he is ‘progressing well’.
Luke O’Nien - Out
O’Nien also had shoulder surgery and he will remain out for now. It was explained back in May: “It's a dislocated shoulder for Luke O'Nien. Luke's wife is with him in the changing room where medical staff have been able to put his shoulder back in.”
Leo Hjelde - Out
Hjelde is sidelined with no real return date after an Achilles repair. Achilles tears are particularly tough to return from, although he is in the back end of that process and hoping to return within the next month or two.
