For the second consecutive week, the Kansas City Chiefs turned in an ugly preseason loss, falling to the Seattle Seahawks 33-16 at Lumen Field. Many of the team’s starters did not play — and at least five Kansas City players left the game with injuries.
First quarter
Kansas City won the coin toss and deferred. Harrison Butker’s kickoff was fielded just in front of the end zone by Seahawks running back George Holani. A return into Chiefs territory was promptly negated by a holding call, beginning Seattle’s drive at their own 19. With Seattle’s regular offense on the field while the Chiefs rotated backups and mixed in some deep reserves, the Seahawks moved the ball at will with little resistance. Quarterback Sam Darnold completed all four passes on the drive. The star for Seattle, however, was running back Zack Charbonnet, who carried the ball five times for 45 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown run. Jason Myers’ extra point secured an opening lead of Seahawks 7, Chiefs 0.
Tyquan Thornton took the ensuing kickoff to the Kansas City 25-yard line to begin the first Chiefs’ drive. As expected, it was backup Gardner Minshew under center. The first play appeared to be designed throw to wideout Rashee Rice, making his preseason debut after missing the first exhibition. Unfortunately, the play was negated by a false start on guard Trey Smith. The Chiefs were able to advance deep into Seattle territory. Minshew looked efficient, finding tight end Jared Wiley for eight yards, executing a 22-yard pass play to running back Isiah Pacheco, and converting a third down with a 14-yard throw to Thornton. Unfortunately, the drive stalled in the red zone. On fourth-and-1 from the Seattle 15-yard line, running back Carson Steele could net gain the needed yard, turning the ball over on downs to the Seahawks.
Former Missouri Tiger Drew Lock came on for Seattle, and Holani and rookie Damien Martinez picked up where Charbonnet left off. The two backs combined for 69 rushing yards on just six carries. The first quarter came to an end with Seattle in the red zone with a first-and-10 at the Chiefs’ 13-yard line.
Second quarter
Two plays later, Lock’s first pass found wide receiver Jake Bobo for a 12-yard touchdown pass. After Myer’s extra point, Seattle extended their lead to Seahawks 14, Chiefs 0.
Rookie wideout Jalen Royals took Myers’ kickoff to midfield to start the drive. Another rookie, running back Brashard Smith, got the call on first down and took a pop pass for 12 yards. The drive then saw short runs combined with a ten-yard pass to tight end Robert Tonyan. A deep throw to wideout Nikko Remigio drew a pass interference call, giving the Chiefs first-and-goal on the Seattle six-yard line. After advancing to the one-yard line, Minshew found Tonyan again for a touchdown in the back of the end zone. Butker’s extra point cut the lead to Seahawks 14, Chiefs 7.
Wideout Derake Young returned the kickoff to the Seattle 34-yard line. The Chiefs’ run defense woes continued, as the Seahawks put 65 more yards on the ground on the drive. This included a 30-yard scramble that saw Lock go untouched until he reached the Kansas City six-yard line. The Chiefs defense did keep Seattle out of the end zone, thwarting Seattle on fourth-and-goal from the two. The Chiefs took over on downs.
Running back Elijah Mitchell was tackled in the end zone for a safety, extending Seattle’s lead to Seahawks 16, Chiefs 7.
Holani returned the kickoff to the Seattle 31 to start the drive. Two pass plays by Lock had Seattle at first-and-ten from the Kansas City 43-yard line as the first half reached the two-minute warning. After the break, the Chiefs’ sloppy defensive play continued as they gave up first downs via penalty on consecutive plays. Lock then found Young for 14 yards before hitting Bobo for the wideout’s second touchdown of the night. Myers’ extra point extended Seattle’s lead to Seahawks 23, Chiefs 7.
The Chiefs took over at their own 20-yard line. A six-yard carry by Mitchell brought the half to a close with Seattle still leading 23-7.
Third quarter
Rookie wideout Key’Shawn Smith returned the opening kickoff to the Kansas City 35-yard line to start the Chiefs’ second half drive. Chris Oladokun entered the game at quarterback. The Chiefs did advance deep into Seattle territory. Tonyan caught two passes for a combined 28 yards. Smith came in at running back and turned three touches into 19 yards. Unfortunately, the drive stalled after wideout Skyy Moore dropped what would have been an easy first down with the Chiefs already in the red zone. After Oladokun was incomplete under pressure on third-and-5 for the Seattle 16, Butker came on for a 34-yard field goal to trim the lead to Seattle 23, Chiefs 10.
A new half would bring the same ground game problems for the Chiefs. After the Seahawks returned the kickoff to the 29-yard line, Lock stayed in at quarterback. While Lock completed a pair of passes for 27 yards on the drive, it was all Seahawks running backs behind Martinez and fellow rookie Jacardia Wright. The two combined for 43 yards on the drive, which ended with Martinez punching in a one-yard touchdown. Myers’ extra point extended Seattle’s lead to Seahawks 30, Chiefs 10.
After the Chiefs took possession at their own 35-yard line after a touchback, their drive went nowhere. Moore, again, failed to bring in a crucial pass, and Oladokun took a ten-yard sack on third down. Matt Araiza came on for his first punt of the night, booting the ball 67 yards to the Seattle nine-yard line. The Seahawks offense retook the field at their own 29 after a 20-yard return.
The Chiefs’ defense appeared to finally show some life as rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe took over for Seattle. The Seahawks’ first two plays combined for only four yards, before giving up a 20-yard pass play on third down. Seattle found resistance on their next set of downs, and the third quarter ended with the Seahawks facing fourth-and-3 from the Kansas City 42-yard line.
Fourth quarter
Milroe attempted to draw the Chiefs offsides to start the final frame before taking a five-yard delay of game penalty. Seahawks punter Michael Dickson appeared to pin the Chiefs deep with the ball sailing out of bounds just in front of the end zone. Offsetting penalties, however, forced a redo. Smith took Dickson’s second attempt at the seven-yard line, and he was forced out of bounds for no gain.
Bailey Zappe came on at quarterback for the Chiefs for a quick possession ending with a three-and-out. Araiza sailed a 56-yard punt to the Seattle 28-yard line. A 12-yard return brought the Seahawks’ offense back on at their own 40.
The Seahawks continued their trend of moving the ball at will before the Chiefs buckled down inside the five-yard line. Rookie linebacker Jeffrey Bassa made a spectacular tackle for loss on running back Anthony Tyus. Milroe was incomplete on third down on the next play. Myers came on for a chip-shot field goal to extend Seattle’s lead to Seahawks 33, Chiefs 10.
Rookie wideout Jimmy Holiday took the kickoff 34 yards to set Kansas City up at their own 39-yard line. The drive encouragingly started with a seven-yard rush by Smith. Unfortunately, Zappe took an 11-yard sack two plays later to force a three-and-out. Araiza punted to the Seattle 20, with a nine-yard return starting the possession at the 29-yard line.
The Chiefs’ defense forced a three and out of their own. Moore fielded a punt from Dickson at the Chiefs’ 12-yard line. After two atrocious plays on offense, Moore took the kick to the house for an 88-yard touchdown punt return. Zappe was incomplete to Holiday on the two-point conversion attempt, but the Chiefs cut Seattle’s lead to Seahawks 33, Chiefs 16.
A penalty on the kickoff backed Seattle up to their own 18 to start the next drive. Minimal gain on the first two plays sent the game to the two-minute warning, with Seattle facing third-and-7 from their own 21-yard line. Tyus was dropped for a three-yard loss coming out of the break. Dickson came on to sail a punt out of bounds at the Chiefs’ 13-yard line with only 56 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Elijah Young took a carry for three yards on first down before gaining three more yards on the game’s final play. The Chiefs drop to 0-2 in the preseason after the 33-16 loss in Seattle.
Special teams
Wide receiver Skyy Moore returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Injuries
Rookie defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott left the game in the first quarter. Norman-Lott left the field under his own power and appeared to get attention on his ankle. Norman-Lott returned in the second quarter.
On the broadcast, it was revealed that cornerback Nazeeh Johnson left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury. Linebacker Jack Cochrane also departed after a knee injury.
Rookie cornerback Nohl Williams went to the locker room in the third quarter. He was later confirmed by the team to be in concussion protocol.
In the fourth quarter, safety Mike Edwards was reported to have left the game with a hamstring injury.
Defensive end Felix Anudike-Usomah left the game in the fourth quarter. He was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
