Chiefs report card: Loss to Seahawks shows stars make a big difference

The Chiefs’ top players — like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones and Nick Bolton, among others — sat this one out, and it showed in a 33-16 loss at the Seattle Seahawks.

Up next: The Chiefs wrap up the preseason on Aug. 22 at home against the Chicago Bears. The game will be broadcast on KSHB (Channel 41) in Kansas City.

KC Star of the Game

Tight end Robert Tonyan should be a lock to make the team. For the second straight game, he was the Chiefs’ top receiver and finished with five catches for 41 yards.

KC Chiefs report card

Passing offense: B

Left guard Kingsley Suamataia seems to struggle in pass blocking but looked better against the run. Still, the Chiefs didn’t allow a sack as quick throwing action was the order of the day for Gardner Minshew, Chris Oladokun and Bailey Zappe. Minshew played well, and the offense picked up 100 yards on his two drives.

Rushing offense: D

The low point was not picking up a first down on fourth-and-1 from the 15 on the first possession. The Chiefs’ offensive line couldn’t create enough of an opening for Carson Steele. Isiah Pacheco got the start and picked up 22 yards on a quick pass. Steele played second, followed by Elijah Mitchell.

Passing defense: D

It was difficult to get pressure against an offense that relied on the quick hits. No sacks and no takeaways for the Chiefs, and three Seattle quarterbacks combined to complete 17 of 21 passes.

Rushing defense: F

Nick Bolton has been praised for not only his play but communication skills. He’s the signal caller who gets teammates in the right position. That was sorely missing in this game. The Seahawks ran wild, amassing more than 250 yards on the ground. One bright spot was the play of rookie linebacker Jeffrey Bassa, whose tackle for loss kept Seattle to a fourth-quarter field goal.

Special teams: A

How about Skyy Moore? He had a rough game with a couple of drops and his spot on the roster is uncertain. But he helped his cause with an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown. Overall, the Chiefs turned in their second straight solid game on special teams. A 49-yard kickoff return by Jalen Royals was his best play of the preseason. Matt Araiza boomed his first punt 67 yards.
