Wolverhampton Wanderers get their Premier League season underway this weekend

Wolverhampton Wanderers get their Premier League campaign underway against Manchester City at Molineux on Saturday evening and fans will be hoping for positive signs in what is a challenging opening fixture.

Chris Sutton predicts Wolves’ fortunes vs Man City

Sutton said in his opening-day predictions for BBC Sport: “Wolves were always well organised last season under manager Vitor Pereira and they are a powerful team too, but they are going to miss Matheus Cunha - how do they replace his goals and assists?

“It is a worry for Manchester City that Rodri is injured again, but they are going to have to deal with that for the next few weeks. We don't really know how City will line up with their new players either, but they surely can't be as fragile - or rudderless - as they were without Rodri last season. Maybe City will turn up and blow Wolves away but I think this will be a lot closer than that.”

Sutton predicted a 2-1 victory for visitors Man City in a tight affair at Molineux. He evidently believes that both sides are still not quite where they want to be and a tense opening-day encounter could be the result of this, with Pep Guardiola’s side narrowly coming out victors.

‘I’m excited’ - Vitor Pereira speaks ahead of new season

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira recently spoke to the club website about how positive he is for the new season. He said: “I’m positive and I’m excited because this is the best league in the world, and, for me, it’s a pleasure to be here. In football, each season is a new season. You always need to reinvent yourself because we’ll face different challenges. We need to rebuild our identity, to reinforce our identity, and this will take some time.

“We have some new players and I’m expecting another one or two or three, and the club is working on that, so we’ll see, as I cannot say now that we are at our best level, we still need to have time for this. But this is the magic that I need in my life to work; to create every time, to express my creativity because I like to create new things. For me, each season is a chance for me to create, to rebuild and to express myself so I can help my team. This is the butterflies and the passion that I feel.

“Next game is Manchester City and I know it’s a big challenge, but in this league every game is a very difficult game, a top level game, and we need to look for ourselves. We need to be the best version of ourselves. It is all about being ourselves and expressing ourselves in our best level because this is what the competition is, or the challenge is.”
