Manchester United have been strongly interested in Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba
The 21-year-old from Cameroon joined the Seagulls in 2023 as a replacement for Moises Caicedo, who made a British record move to Chelsea at the time.
Man Utd get firm rebuttal from Brighton as they are set to explore other targets
Giving a major, and what is likely to be a final, update on United’s pursuit of Baleba for this summer, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said: “Manchester United made official and formal contact with Brighton today [Friday] for Carlos Baleba, as expected.
“Clear answer from BHAFC: no intention to sell, not even indicating a price for this summer. Man United now expected to turn attention to different targets.”
The Red Devils lacked mobility in midfield last season and Baleba was seen as somebody who could address that issue and be a player who would form a major part of the club’s future, as he will not turn 22 until January.
Christian Eriksen has left the club and is yet to be replaced while Casemiro enters the final year of his contract at United but has been deemed available for transfer if the right offer comes in.
United have also confirmed the loan exit of Toby Collyer, with the 21-year-old set to spend the season with Championship side West Brom. It means that an alternate target is needed before the window shuts on September 1.
Toby Collyer reflects on Man Utd loan exit
“I spoke with the gaffer Ryan Mason and I got a really good first impression from him,” said Collyer of why he made the move to West Brom.
“Albion seems like the right place and the right environment for me and I’m hoping to play as much as possible.
“This is a great opportunity for me to help the team and take my game to the next level, which I’m really excited about.”
West Brom sporting director Andrew Nestor said: "Toby is a dynamic midfielder who we rate highly and believe that his strengths will complement our already strong midfield options.
"He is an ideal central midfielder for our playing model with his physical attributes, progressive play and passing ability, and has the capability to make a real impression this season."
