3 right-backs Wigan Athletic should consider amid Isaac Mabaya injury blow

Wigan Athletic are looking to continue their strong start to the summer transfer window, but now a defensive gap has emerged.

The majority of Wigan Athletic fans will be happy with the business that’s been completed so far. WAFC have had a mixture of a start in League One, defeating Northampton Town and losing to Leyton Orient so far.

Business has already been done in the defensive positions with the arrivals of Morgan Fox and Fraser Murray. However, with recent news confirming Isaac Mabaya was injured during the Latics’ Carabao Cup game against Notts County, work to strengthen this position won’t be stopping anytime soon.

It has not been confirmed what injury the Liverpool loanee has suffered, but Lowe stated it looks a bad one.

Nonetheless, with Mabaya’s injury in mind, we put forward three potential right-back targets Wigan Athletic would be wise to have on their radar…

Mahlon Romeo

One man who will want to prove he can play at a high League One level is Mahlon Romeo and given the need for more pace in the Wigan Athletic defence, his free transfer signing could be perfect. A move would see the Latics bring in a player who has played the majority of his career at Championship and League One level.

Cardiff City agreed to terminate his contract in 2024, so he would be available for nothing.

A move to stay in the EFL could well come to the fore due to the vast experience at Millwall and Portsmouth but if WAFC can offer him starts, they could stand a good chance of getting him through the door on a free.

Cyrus Christie

Experience defenders are something Wigan Athletic have already snapped up this summer, with the arrival of former QPR man Fox, and ex-Swansea City defender Cyrus Christie would continue this trend.

Like Fox, he was freed by a Championship side following the decision to not renew his contract. The 32 -year-old would offer an experienced and mature presence at the back.

He could be a replacement for injured Latics man Mabaya, with the Coventry-born defender having played the majority of his football at Championship level and currently without a club.

Josh Acheampong

A player that can mirror the profile of injured Mabaya in the right back position is Josh Acheampong, who is currently at Chelsea.

The 19 -year-old is looking for his first taste of first-team football after being at Chelsea since signing his first professional contract in 2024.

It would be a massively ambitious move for a prospect of his calibre, but the prevalent role he would play could make Wigan Athletic a decent option.
