Newcastle United are in the running to sign Royal Antwerp’s Mahamadou Doumbia this summer.
On July 22nd, Africa Foot reported the Magpies have turned their attention towards the 21-year-old. On August 3rd, the midfielder confirmed Newcastle are one of the clubs who have shown interest.
Saturday’s edition of Gazet van Antwerpen, a newspaper local to the Belgian club, have interviewed the Malian to discuss his future. With Newcastle among those keen, the possibility of Doumbia changing clubs in this window isn’t ruled out.
The newspaper asked him to rate the chances of him leaving the Jupiler Pro League side in the next two weeks.
Responding to that, he said: “I don’t know. If I had to give a score out of a hundred, the chances are 50/50.”
Gazet van Antwerpen immediately mentioned Newcastle, Eintracht Frankfurt and Sevilla, who made an inadequate offer at the start of this window.
They add Eddie Howe’s side and Eintracht Frankfurt are both eyeing a move for him this summer.
On these two clubs, Doumbia explained: “If it comes to a transfer, I’ll be ready.”
Although the Malian is willing to change clubs, he doesn’t want to be lose focus of his job.
“That’s true [more spotlight], but right now I have to keep a cool head. If I start thinking about a possible transfer, my level will suffer. The most important thing now is to satisfy the club and the fans,” he added.
It remains to be seen whether Newcastle will make a concrete move to sign Doumbia.
