Semenyo stars in encouraging Cherries performance in defeat: Player ratings

Although they lost 4-2, Bournemouth hauled themselves back onto level terms after trailing 2-0, with Antoine Semenyo starring.

Two late goals for the hosts from Frederico Chiesa and Mo Salah meant Andoni Iraola’s side left empty handed – but there were plenty of positives to take from the night.

The Daily Echo rates the Cherries players in defeat at Anfield.

**Djordje Petrovic: 6**

The Serbian keeper was making his competitive debut for the Cherries and I thought he looked decent. With a new back line there will inevitably be some period of settling in, and Petrovic is a part of that – but he made some good saves and wasn’t to blame for any of the goals.

**Adrien Truffert: 6**

As above, the left back is settling into the Bournemouth side but he looked bright. His overlapping runs on the left were excellent and he produced a couple of good crosses, so he will be an asset going forward this season. Defensively he looked ok, too – although there were a couple of errors that hopefully will be ironed out.

**Marcos Senesi: 5**

A busy game for the Argentine. He was perhaps slightly unfortunate but he could have dealt with the ball better for the first Liverpool goal, but his block ended up bouncing back into the path of Hugo Ekitike. A brain fade when the last man could have seen him sent off for handball, but he will have been relieved that VAR did not intervene.

The new centre back slotted in well, but you could tell at times that he was in a new team and a new system. Encouraging signs for the player that is there, but as above, there may be some period of settling in.

**Adam Smith: 6**

Solid as ever from the skipper. He dealt very well with the Liverpool attack when called upon – and spoke very well after the game on the racist abuse that Antoine Semenyo reported in the first half.

**Tyler Adams: 6**

The American was good – the highlight of his game was his brilliant pass up to David Brooks for the first Cherries goal.

_(Image: Peter Byrne/PA Wire)_ **Marcus Tavernier: 6**

A decent showing from Tavernier, and perhaps a glimpse that he may be used slightly deeper this season when needed – he and Scott dovetailed nicely in midfield in what was a flexible centre for the Cherries.

**Alex Scott: 7**

A strong start to the season for the Englishman. He grew into the game and impressed with his energy, and as with Tavernier, he operated well in a flexible midfield.

**David Brooks: 8**

An excellent showing from the Welshman. He looked a constant threat to the Liverpool back line. Brooks could be set to play a big role this season, and started well with a brilliant assist, racing onto Adams’ ball in behind and producing a pinpoint cross for Semenyo to finish for his first goal.

**Antoine Semenyo: 9**

A man of the match performance from the Ghanaian. After the disgusting events of the first half, where he reported racist abuse to the referee Anthony Taylor, the mental strength to continue playing and to score two stunning goals was a true testament to the character of the forward.

_(Image: Peter Byrne/PA Wire)_ Both goals were brilliant – but the second, solo goal was the pick of the two and could even be in line for Cherries goal of the season come May…

**Evanilson: 6**

The Brazilian looked good at times and was particularly effective when running off his man to flick a header goalwards, which happened on a couple of occasions. He’ll be hoping to get on the scoresheet soon for his confidence, but his work in the press was as good as usual and he’ll be important for the Cherries this season.

**Substitutes:**

**Hamed Traore: 6**

**Ben Winterburn: 5**

**Eli Junior Kroupi: N/A**
