Miley, Maatsen and a Sunderland hijack: Latest transfer news and rumours today

Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley has emerged as a loan target for recently-relegated Ipswich Town, according to a report.

The 19-year-old remains an incredibly highly-rated member of Eddie Howe's first team, but his path to the starting lineup is currently blocked by Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Miley started just one Premier League game in the 2024-25 season, and the 2006-born talent could now be sent out on a temporary deal to gain valuable playing experience.

According to the Daily Mail, Championship returnees Ipswich have set their sights on a loan deal for Miley after a proposed £20m move for Middlesbrough's Hayden Hackney fell through.

However, Magpies boss Eddie Howe is 'reluctant' to let the teenager go as he feels that his side remain short of numbers in midfield, in spite of the recent capture of Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa.

Should Ipswich be forced to give up their pursuit of Miley, Bournemouth's Lewis Cook and Philip Billing have supposedly been earmarked as alternative targets by Kieran McKenna.

Serie A club 'set sights' on Aston Villa's Ian Maatsen

Ian Maatsen for Aston Villa on January 10, 2025

Newcastle have poached Ramsey from Villa Park, and Unai Emery could now see one of his defenders lured away from the West Midlands, as Atalanta BC are reportedly in for left-back Ian Maatsen.

The former Chelsea player arrived at Aston Villa last summer on the back of helping Borussia Dortmund reach the Champions League final, and the Lions forked out £38.4m for his services.

Maatsen made 29 Premier League appearances during his debut season for Unai Emery's side - coming up with one goal and two assists - but he only started 10 of those matches amid intense competition from Lucas Digne.

Now, Tutto Atalantaclaim that Atalanta have identified Maatsen as a prime target following a serious injury to first-choice left-back Mitchel Bakker, who underwent surgery for an ACL problem last month.

La Dea also sold Matteo Ruggeri to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer, and Maatsen is the 'priority' for a reinforcement thanks to his speed, tactical awareness and versatility.

The left-back is under contract at Villa Park for another five seasons, though, and it remains to be seen if Emery is willing to let him go given that Alex Moreno could also depart in the next couple of weeks.

Sunderland to hijack Juventus deal for Premier League midfielder?

Brighton & Hove Albion's Matt O'Riley on February 1, 2025

One of Atalanta's Serie A rivals could supposedly face a fight to sign a Premier League player, though, as Sunderland are plotting to hijack Juventus' move for Brighton & Hove Albion's Matt O'Riley.

The 24-year-old made a name for himself at Celtic before joining the Seagulls in a £25.5m deal in 2024, making 23 appearances in his first season for Fabian Hurzeler's side.

O'Riley struck two goals and set up three more in the process, but he also struggled with ankle and knee injuries and made just 11 starts in the Premier League.

A move away from the Amex is therefore already being mooted for the Denmark international, and Football Insider reports that Sunderland rate O'Riley 'very highly' and could try to pip Juventus to a summer deal.

Brighton boss Hurzeler has supposedly given 'the green light' to O'Riley's prospective exit, as the Seagulls are increasingly confident of holding onto Carlos Baleba amid interest from Manchester United.

However, the South Coast side are set to demand a small profit to sell O'Riley, whom they have slapped a £30m price tag on, and his contract does not expire for another four seasons.

Wrexham eye 'surprise bid' for Arsenal FA Cup winner

Down in the Championship, former Arsenal FA Cup winner Calum Chambers could supposedly become Wrexham's latest high-profile summer recruit.

The 30-year-old has just started his second season with Cardiff City after joining on a free transfer from Aston Villa in 2024, and he immediately cemented himself as a regular for the Bluebirds.

Chambers played 41 Championship games for Cardiff last season, and while he could not save the Welsh club from demotion to League One, he could be offered an immediate route back to the second tier.

According to talkSPORT, Wrexham are weighing up a 'surprise bid' for the three-cap England international, who was named Cardiff's new captain for the 2025-26 season following Joe Ralls's departure.

Chambers only has two years left to run on his deal with the League One club, but it is not known whether he is keen to make the move back to the Championship straight away having just been given the armband.

The versatile defender is best known for his seven-and-a-half-year spell at Arsenal from 2014 to 2022, where he made 122 appearances in all competitions and won the 2014-15 FA Cup.
