Former NBA baller Michael Carter-Williams set his sights on boxing

In a strange turn of events, former NBA basketball player Michael Carter-Williams has taken a swing in the boxing ring.

Carter-Williams was drafted 11th overall in 2013 by the Philadelphia 76ers. He went on to claim the 2014 Rookie of the Year honors, ahead of fellow draftees Victor Oladipo, Trey Burke, Mason Plumlee, and Tim Hardaway, Jr. This is the draft class that also featured Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steven Adams, and Rudy Gobert.

He played two seasons with the 76ers before stints in Milwaukee, Chicago, Charlotte, Houston, and Orlando before moving into Mexico City’s G-League.

In October of 2024, Carter-Williams stated he was retired from basketball.

These days, Michael Carter-Williams has shown an interest in boxing, something he picked up watching as a youngster with his grandfather.

His interest led to his amateur boxing debut in the Broad Street Brawl, a charity fight for Bigvision Community, a non-profit dedicated to supporting young people in recovery from substance abuse.

His opponent was thirty-six-year-old amateur boxer Sam Khatib.

Carter-Williams won on decision after three two-minute rounds.

Though a small sample size, the former NBA star is interested in continuing.

“I don’t know about being a professional,” he said, “but boxing is so broad now that you don’t even have to go pro to compete.”
