San Antonio Spurs fans have been waiting [for their team to take a step up](https://airalamo.com/early-predictions-indicate-worst-spurs-laughably-wrong) and finally make it back to the postseason. In 2025-26, we could finally see that vision become reality if Victor Wembanyama remains healthy.
Once upon a time, the Spurs were the team in the NBA that never missed the playoffs. They only missed out on the postseason a grand total of four times since moving to the city of San Antonio in the 1973-74 season up until the 2018-19 season.
But since that year in which DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge were the team's best players, the Spurs have missed the playoffs in the last six seasons in a row. It's a position the franchise was utterly unfamiliar with not too long ago, but it's now become the norm. Frankly, the fanbase is fed up with it.
Of course, everyone knew the team's direction was bound to shift massively after that fateful day in May 2023 when San Antonio officially won the draft lottery and landed the right to select Victor Wembanyama first overall the following month. It wasn't going to be a matter of if they got back to being a playoff team, it was a matter of when at that point.
The Spurs are primed for a breakthrough season
----------------------------------------------
And really, I think everyone knew it wasn't going to be some instantaneous culture shift. No one expected the Spurs to come out in 2023-24 and suddenly become a top-four seed in the conference again just because Wemby was now a rostered player.
But at the same time, it's also been frustrating to this fanbase to see no postseason appearances in the first two seasons of Victor's career. The reason why they didn't make it last year is understandable given how much time Wembanyama missed to end the year, but that didn't make it any easier for Spurs fans to have to sit on their couches and watch the Houston Rockets play in the playoffs in April and May.
Thankfully, there's a very real situation where this playoff drought comes to an end in less than a year. San Antonio's roster is positively loaded now, and although the Western Conference is still crowded, they have enough pieces to be more than competitive for an entire regular season should health hold up.
[If Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox,](https://airalamo.com/spurs-fans-substantially-underselling-de-aaron-fox-partnership-wembanyama) Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle and company all mesh and stay on the court consistently, this team could find themselves in the top part of the standings for an extended period of time. And when that happens, the rest of the NBA won't be able to do anything other than shake their heads, because they knew this was coming.
Don't be surprised to see the Spurs win 45 or even 50 games next season. If they can reach that mark, they'll almost certainly be playing beyond the end of the regular season.
