Why are Premier League players wearing black armbands and doing a minute's silence this weekend?

Premier League footballers are all taking to the pitch wearing black armbands this weekend.

Arsenal and Manchester City will be hot on their heels as usual, with the rest of the big six - Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur - also strengthening their squads.

Players will also wear black armbands, and stadium screens will display tribute messages and images.

Jota, 28, and Silva, 25, died in a car crash in northern Spain last month. Liverpool and Wolves will hold additional tributes during their respective matches against Bournemouth and Manchester City.

Tributes were first paid before last weekend’s Community Shield between Liverpool and Crystal Palace, with Ian Rush, Palace chairman Steve Parish, and FA chair Debbie Hewitt laying wreaths at the Liverpool end of Wembley.

The planned minute’s silence was cut short after noise from the Palace section drew boos, though Liverpool manager Arne Slot later said he believed the disruption was accidental.
