Glenn Murray questions Gyokeres’ value

A former teammate of Viktor Gyokeres believes the Swede is nowhere near the £64m Arsenal paid. He predicts the forward will struggle in the Premier League.

Glenn Murray believes Gyokeres won’t shine at Arsenal

The buzz around Viktor Gyokeres has been loud since Arsenal broke the bank to bring him in from Sporting Lisbon. On paper, the numbers are huge, 97 goals in just over 100 appearances and back-to-back league titles in Portugal.

For the Gunners, a top striker has been the missing piece for years. That was the one thing standing between them and the end of a title drought stretching more than two decades. Fans have been craving a marksman to tilt the race against Manchester City and Liverpool. Now, Gyokeres is meant to be that man.

But not everyone is convinced. Glenn Murray, who shared a dressing room and forward line with Gyokeres at Brighton, isn’t buying into the hype. Speaking ahead of the season opener, Murray admitted he doesn’t see the Swedish star justifying such a big price tag. He described Gyokeres as strong, quick, and powerful, but warned that the PL is at different level. As per Murray, the Swede could find life at the Emirates far tougher than many expect.

Gunners move could backfire

Gyokeres has wasted no time finding the net in Arsenal colours. He scored in a pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao. A couple of early struggles could turn the mood at the Emirates very quickly. That is especially with such a huge price tag weighing on him.

The pressure isn’t just on Gyokeres either. For Mikel Arteta, the expectations from this season are massive as well. Another failed title charge could see him under a lot of criticism. That said, Viktor Gyokeres and head coach Mikel Arteta will have to deliver in this campaign.
