Borussia Dortmund Target Chelsea Defender Renato Veiga

German club Borussia Dortmund are eyeing to buy Chelsea defender Renato Veiga in this ongoing summer transfer window. The tall Portuguese defender recently won the UEFA Nations League trophy with the national team. He wasn’t an option for Borussia Dortmund just weeks ago. But the sudden injury of Nicolas Sule has given a setback to the German club. Now, Borussia Dortmund have shown their interest in bringing in the Chelsea defender as soon as possible. The deal hasn’t been finalised yet but the player has given the green light already.

All You Need to Know About Renato Veiga

Renato Veiga began his football career at Sporting Lisbon. He joined the academy back in the 2013-14 season. But shockingly, he joined Moroccan football academy Foot for three seasons. Then, he came back to Portugal and joined another small Portuguese club named Real SC’s U-15 group. From there, he returned to his pioneer club, Sporting Lisbon. He was registered for the U-17 team and gradually received promotions. In the 2022-23 season, German club FC Augsburg brought in Veiga on loan from the reserve team of Sporting Lisbon. He returned to the reserve team after spending a fruitful season-long loan deal. While he was hoping to break into the first team, Switzerland’s top club FC Basel bought him in the next season. At FC Basel, he was not only rock solid at the back, but he scored 2 goals and provided 1 assist. His first big move happened when English Premier League side Chelsea secured his services from Basel last season. He has played in 18 official matches so far for Chelsea. Just like his Switzerland days, he has also registered 2 goals and 1 assist for the Blues. But he was loaned to Italian heavyweights Juventus during mid-season. He spent the rest of the season at the Old Lady. After the expiry of his loan deal, he returned to Chelsea. Once again, he was hoping to start in this current Chelsea team this season. But now, Borussia Dortmund have initiated primary talks with Chelsea over the possible loan deal of Renato Veiga.

Renato Veiga is Expensive for Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund need to win a major trophy this year. The last time BVB won a major trophy (BFB Pokal), Erling Haaland was still a Dortmund footballer. The German club then bottled the league in the final league match and gifted the title to arch-rivals Bayern Munich. It was Jude Bellingham’s last match at the Signal Iduna Park. Then, Real Madrid defeated a spirited Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League final at the Wembley. This year, the German club has tried to build a solid squad this season. But unfortunately, their defensive mainstay, Sule has suffered an injury. The club feels that Sule will be sidelined for several weeks. Actually, Borussia Dortmund were in talks with Chelsea over the potential transfer of Renato Veiga from January. But Chelsea have set a price tag of €30 million for Veiga. Renato Veiga has also made a condition that he will only operate as a CB in his new club. But, Borussia Dortmund feel that this amount of price tag is too much for Renato Veiga. That is why they were not making a hurry in the negotiations earlier. But this recent injury has changed the plans. Borussia Dortmund now want Renato Veiga in a loan deal. According to multiple reports, other clubs have also enquired about the 22-year-old left-footed centre back.

Chelsea want around €30m for Veiga to leave accomodating his request to go and play as CB, not as LB.

From the Author’s End: Chelsea Should Not Rush in Renato Veiga Deal

Things are a bit difficult in the Chelsea camp recently due to injury issues. While Chalobah has a niggle, Chelsea’s big hope, Levi Colwill, has suffered an ACL injury in the pre-season tour. Head coach Enzo Maresca has also clarified his intention of not buying any new defender to replace Colwill. Amid this situation, Chelsea club officials should think twice before releasing Veiga. The football fans still remember his heroic performance against Spain in the UEFA Nations League final.
