Packers to showcase historic 1923 throwback uniforms for Week 9

The Green Bay Packers will showcase their 1923-inspired alternate uniforms on Nov. 2 when they take on the Carolina Panthers at Lambeau Field. Before that matchup, the Packers will host their second Winter Warning whiteout game on Sept. 11, welcoming the Washington Commanders to Lambeau Field.

For the first time in NFL history, a team will step onto the field in modern helmets crafted to mirror the old leather versions from the league’s early days. The uniform pairs deep navy jerseys with the leather-inspired helmets, bringing back the look that marked one of the franchise’s most defining seasons.

Packers historian Cliff Christl has described 1923 as perhaps the most significant year in the team’s history, even more impactful than the arrival of Vince Lombardi in 1959 or Ron Wolf in 1991. That year, the Packers transitioned into public ownership, a landmark move that secured the franchise’s future under the care of its fans.

The Packers will debut their new throwback set against the Carolina Panthers, the only time they will wear it this season. The game is part of a wider lineup of themed home matchups for the 2025 season, with each of the eight contests highlighting a different theme. Earlier Green Bay throwbacks took inspiration from the 1940s and 1950s, but this marks the first uniform to celebrate the 1923 design.

Green Bay have planned a unique theme for every home game at Lambeau Field this season. They open in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions with a celebration that doubles as Alumni Weekend and includes a 15th anniversary tribute to their Super Bowl XLV victory over the Steelers.

In Week 2, the Packers host the Washington Commanders on Thursday night for the “Winter Warning” whiteout, where fans are encouraged to wear white and halftime will include a tribute to Hall of Famer Sterling Sharpe.

The celebration continues in Week 6 during the annual “Packers vs. Cancer” game against the Bengals, when Green Bay will again honor Sharpe, a three-time First-Team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler from 1988 to 1994, by adding his name to the Lambeau Field façade following his induction earlier this year as the 29th member of the organization in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
