Exclusive: Why Sheffield United have a 'good chance' of keeping Gustavo Hamer despite Leeds United and PSV interest

EFL Analysis can confirm what the future of Sheffield United star Gus Hamer looks like towards the end of the summer transfer window.

Sheffield United visit Swansea City this afternoon (August 16) as the Blades search for their first win of the season.

In the 2025/26 Championship curtain-raiser, Ruben Selles’ side were beaten handsomely 4-1 by Bristol City, who enacted their revenge for May’s play-off defeat.

Birmingham City beat Sheffield United 2-1 in the opening round of the Carabao Cup in mid-week, placing even further pressure on Selles to kickstart the Blades’ season.

Amid their lacklustre start, EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal how the footballing future lies for Sheffield United skipper Gustavo Hamer.

Exclusive: Why Sheffield United have ‘chance’ to keep Gustavo Hamer

Sheffield United have let several key figures leave throughout the summer transfer window, most notably with Vini Souza joining Wolfsburg, Feyenoord signing Anel Ahmedhodzic and Kieffer Moore moving to Wrexham.

As well as those departures, the Blades have been equally as lacklustre in terms of incomings, having spent just shy of £2m on transfers so far this summer.

Leeds United are “huge admirers” of Hamer, and Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven have been linked with the Dutchman throughout the summer window.

Now, EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal with information from our Chief Football correspondent Graeme Bailey, that there is a “reasonable chance” Hamer stays at Sheffield United.

Bailey said: “I don’t think that they ever wanted Gus Hamer to go, and as it’s looking now, there’s certainly a good chance that he stays.

“He’s the captain and I think, despite the scoreline against Bristol City, Ruben Selles actually got them playing some wonderful football and it looks as if that system will suit Hamer.

Bailey added: “I think there’s a reasonable chance he stays.”

Sheffield United must not let Gustavo Hamer leave this summer

It took only a 35-minute cameo from the bench at Birmingham for Hamer to show his supreme technical qualities.

With the Blues one-nil ahead, Hamer won possession on the halfway line at St Andrew’s before firing an audacious strike which sailed over the head of James Beadle to stun the Blues.

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed this week in a Sheffield United transfer update that Selles is “not happy” with his squad and that the Blades boss is intent on recruiting defensive reinforcements.

With Selles already discontent with his current squad, it would be unfathomable for the Bramall Lane hierarchy to entertain any further offers for Hamer between now and deadline day, given how imperative he is for Sheffield United.
