Enzo Maresca made it clear in his pre-match press conference that he believes Chelsea need to go back into the transfer market before the end of the window.
The Italian made it clear he wanted a new centre-back to come into the club following the injury suffered by Levi Colwill ahead of the new season.
The manager could be about to welcome Wesley Fofana back from injury, although it feels unlikely he will be thrown back into the starting position for the opening game of the campaign against Crystal Palace.
This leaves Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo as the likely candidates to start, however Josh Acheampong may get his chance as the Blues turn away interest in him.

Chelsea not looking to sign new centre-back despite Enzo Maresca’s plea
The Blues have spent big money again in the summer transfer window, with the majority of that going on players who will transform the attack.
Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian all came in for decent transfer fees, however it doesn’t look as if this will be added to by a new centre-back.
According to The Guardian, there is no intention from Chelsea to panic and buy a new centre-back in the final few weeks of the window.
The report goes on to say that the Blues feel there are enough options available to the manager to get through the blow of losing Colwill, even disregarding those who look set for an exit.

Chelsea’s new defensive option
The Blues have spent significant money to sign Jorrel Hato already this summer, beating the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool to the deal with Ajax.
While Hato has been signed as cover for Marc Cucurella, he has played at centre-back in the past, and can certainly be an option if required at the heart of defence.
The Blues also still employ Renato Veiga, despite the fact that a number of clubs have registered interest in signing the out-of-favour defender.
However, being left-footed and having half a season under his belt playing at centre-back could see him emerge as a serious option to be used there, should he not move on this summer.
