Browns make announcement on Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel ahead of preseason game

The quarterback battle with the Cleveland Browns is at the center of attention in the football world. With Shedeur Sanders dominating headlines, Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel hasn't had much attention, at least until now.

The Browns announced ahead of their second preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles that Gabriel is expected to get the start. Sanders started the first preseason game, and now, Gabriel gets his shot.

With Oregon, the left-handed quarterback led the conference in completions, attempts, and passing yards per game with 275.5. He was third in Heisman voting and helped lead Oregon to the top spot and a very strong year overall.

He had a 72.9 completion percentage with 3,857 yards passing and 30 passing touchdowns while throwing six interceptions. He also ran for 149 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024 at Oregon.

The 24-year-old prospect didn't suit up for the Browns in their first preseason game due to injury, but in their second game, he's not only suiting up, he's getting the start.

It's a big first step for Gabriel in his pursuit of the starting job. With Sanders playing well in his Browns debut, going 14/23 for 138 yards and two touchdowns, along with 19 rushing yards, the performance of Gabriel will be highly scrutinized.

His matchup is against the defending Super Bowl champions, though he isn't going to face any of the starters for the Eagles. This is Gabriel's best chance to showcase his potential, and if he has a good day against the Eagles, he could significantly boost his chances of earning a higher spot on the quarterback depth chart come September.
