SEATTLE (KWCH) - The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense struggled and suffered a multitude of injuries during a 33-16 loss to the Seahawks on Friday.
The Chiefs managed just one offensive touchdown - a 1-yard connection between Gardner Minshew and Robert Tonyan in the second quarter. Skyy Moore’s 88-yard punt return in the final minutes was the only other time the Chiefs found the endzone.
The moment for the second-round pick came after a pair of drops earlier in the game.
“It felt great, just showing that sense of resiliency. Obviously, I had two drops this game, and it felt like I was in my head after the first one,” Moore said. “To go back there and catch a punt return knowing my history of punt returns and take it back to the house. It meant a lot to me, this game and a lot for my confidence. Just showing myself that you can’t lose if you keep going.”
Seattle managed to rush for 268 yards on 48 attempts, including 114 in the first quarter. The Chiefs opted to rest several defensive starters, including Chris Jones, Nick Bolton, Drue Tranquill and Trent McDuffie.
But the story was the injuries that piled up. Linebacker Jack Cochrane (knee), cornerback Nazeeh Johnson (shoulder), rookie cornerback Nohl Williams (concussion), safety Mike Edwards (hamstring) and defensive lineman Felix Anudike-Uzomah (hamstring) all left the game.
With Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce sidelined, the offense struggled outside of the first two drive. Minshew’s first series went 60 yards to the Seahawks 15, but a virtual measurement ruled Carson Steele’s rush on fourth-and-1 was short. Minshew capped his only other drive with his touchdown pass, ending 7-for-9 for 70 yards.
Tonyan led the Chiefs with 5 catches for 41 yards. Rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals flashed with a 49-yard kick return.
The Chiefs will conclude the preseason at home against the Bears on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. with the game airing on KWCH.
