Man United aiming to create history in Arsenal showdown at Old Trafford

Manchester United will be bidding to become the first-ever team to beat Arsenal 100 times when they welcome the Gunners to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils have been victorious in 99 of their previous 243 meetings with Arsenal, and they have only beaten Aston Villa (107) on more occasions throughout their history.

Man United are now aiming to become the first side to beat Arsenal on 100 occasions in all competitions.

This will be just the second time that the Red Devils have hosted Arsenal on the opening weekend of a new season - recording a 4-1 victory when that last occurred in 1989-90.

Man United have only actually lost two of their last 18 Premier League home matches against Arsenal, winning 10 times in the process, but the two defeats have been while Mikel Arteta has been in charge of the North London club.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last 14 away matches in the Premier League, with their last loss on their travels coming against Newcastle United in November 2024.

Man United could have an all-new front three against the Gunners this weekend, with new signings Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko all in line to play from the first whistle.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are set to have Viktor Gyokeres at the tip of their attack, with the Sweden international in line to make his Gunners debut against his former Sporting Lisbon head coach Ruben Amorim.

What are Man United's ambitions for the 2025-26 campaign?

Man United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, but Amorim is targeting a return to Europe for the 2026-27 campaign, which could mean that the Red Devils need to finish in the top five.

"We want to return to Europe. But it's hard as a Man United coach to say one thing like that. But we need to be realistic with our fans, that we are going to have to fight a lot because there are lots of good teams who have had more time than us together," Amorim told reporters on Friday.

"But we are going to fight for it. We want to improve, we need to focus game-by-game. If we are thinking how we're going to finish the season, it's a problem. Let's focus game-by-game -- we want to win against Arsenal. That is the main focus."

Man United could still add two more players to their squad before the end of the transfer window, with the 20-time English champions looking to bring in a goalkeeper and a central midfielder.
